Liverpool won their seventh League Cup trophy beating Birmingham City on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Robbie Fowler scored the opening goal before an injury time penalty for City forced the game into extra time. Fowler lifted the trophy, sponsored by Worthington, and it was to be the first of a treble of trophies the Reds would win in the 2000/2001 season.
