Spurs scored late in the game with Shaquile Coulthirst reacting quickest to a shot parried by Reds' goalkeeper Tyrell Belford. Liverpool had by far the best chances of the game, but even with substitute Adam Morgan on they couldn't put the ball in the back of the Spurs net.

It was the Blues who opened the scoring, their side packed with first team players took the lead as the Greek striker Apostolos Vellios headed a cross past a diving goalkeeper Brad Jones. Liverpool weren't behind too long, the impressive winger Raheem Sterling levelled the score at 1-1, but despite plenty of chances in the second half the game finished level.

Aston Villa took the lead after only ten minutes through Chris Herd and it took the Reds until the 82 minute to find a reply, Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz pouncing after Villa's goalkeeper Shay Given made a diving save. The Reds couldn't get a second despite plenty of pressure and five minutes of added time, which continues their worst run of results since the 1950's.

Maxi Rodriguez twice scored from close range before goalkeeper Alexander Doni was sent off and a penalty awarded. Doni was already deputising after Jose Reina was sent off two games earlier. Substitute 'keeper Brad Jones, who now looks set to face Everton in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final, saved from Yakubu. However the Rovers striker struck with a header and a second-half equaliser from the spot before Carroll's late winner. The £35m striker's intervention, from Daniel Agger's knockdown, capped an incident-packed 90 minutes and earned Liverpool only their second win in nine top-flight games.
