Liverpool FC 1-2 Blackpool FC
FA Premier League
Anfield, Liverpool
Sunday, October 3rd, 2010
Liverpool suffered yet another embarrassing home defeat, their second in succession. After the humiliation of losing to Northampton, it was another minnow, this time Blackpool, who's turn it was to heap the pressure on Reds manager Roy Hodgson.
Blackpool took the lead with a penalty and then scored the second during injury time in the first half.
Liverpool's response in the second half was tepid. With Christian Poulsen and Joe Cole both ineffectual the 63-year-old Reds boss dithered and stalled on the touchline unable to make a decision.
It wasn't until Poulsen was replaced, with loud cheers from the all sides of the ground, that the Reds made a breakthrough. That came via the head of Greek man-mountain Sotirios Kyrgiakos. Not pretty or skilful but it got Liverpool back in the game.
Unfortunately Roy's men didn't have the guile to break down a resolute Blackpool who hung on to claim their biggest ever scalp and leave Liverpool firmly in the relegation zone.
During the match the Kop called for Kenny Dalglish, a clear indication that the fans wanted Hodgson out and their legendary hero to take the helm.
