Wales Under 19's won an exciting game at Llanelli this evening by 2-1 against Iceland in the UEFA qualifier.
Wales had missed an early chance by wasting a penalty after 20 minutes following Billy Bodin being bundled-over in the area. Captain Adam Matthews stepped-up to take it, but his shot was easily saved.
Fourteen minutes later, it looked as though Wales would pay a heavy price for the miss, as Iceland converted one for themselves, following a mid-air clash between Danny Alfei (Swansea City) and a visiting forward. Porarinnsson slotted the ball home and for the remainder of the half looked in control.
Wales came-out for the second half looking to square things-up and showed far more penetration around the box. On 56 minutes, Bodin was once again said to have been fouled in the area and this time, he stepped-up to take the kick. He put it home with no problems to get Wales back on level terms.
By now, the Icelandic team was starting to loose their composure and Wales were taking the upper hand. Substitutes Elliott Chamberlain and Tom Bender were making an impact in trying to get the win that Wales so badly needed. On 79 minutes, it was Elliott Chamberlain who got the all-important goal and Wales were well on top as Iceland totally lost their heads.
Chances came the way of Wales on several occasions in the final 10 minutes as Iceland threw everyone forward and breaks cam the way of Wales without the youngsters being able to convert a further goal that would have sealed the win.
As it was, the side did hold-on and a 2--1 win was fully merited.
In the other game, Turkey defeated Kazakhstan 5-1 at the Brewery Field, Bridgend. The result means a win over the Kazakhs will give Wales one of the two spots at the top of the group that will see them through to the Elite Round in the Spring of 2011.
Manager Brian Flynn was delighted with the result and praised the players for their 'never say die' attitude.
